Built for educators

The average U.S. teacher earns $50K to $80K, and the cost of living has not waited.

Big School House offers licensed educators a structured, professional and surprisingly lucrative supplement, leveraging the skills you spent years developing, without the chaos of a side hustle or the friction of a second job.

The rate is set by the platform. Not negotiated, not bid on, not subject to the race-to-the-bottom dynamics that plague freelance tutoring marketplaces.

Autonomy and Tools

You are a skilled educator. Not a proctor.

Curriculum, not constraint

Workbooks and textbooks eliminate the hidden burden of lesson planning, but how you teach the material is entirely yours.

Set your own radius

Choose your maximum travel distance of 5, 10, 15 or 20 miles. The platform only matches you with families whose zip codes fall within it.

Your own schedule

Input your available days and times. Select the grade levels and subjects you are qualified to teach. The platform respects what you set and never overbooks.

Onboarding and Verification

Rigorous, but quick.

Big School House is a credentialed professional network, not a marketplace. Verification is what separates us from every freelance tutoring platform you have heard of.

Submit credentials

Your state teaching license number, degree information, and years of experience.

Automated verification

The platform cross-references your license against the state license database in real time.

Background check

Processed through our system. Once cleared, you build your profile, set your radius and availability, and start receiving matches.

To qualify you must hold a degree, currently hold or recently have held an active state teaching license, and have taught at a public, charter or accredited private school within the last five years, with institutional verification.

Inside a session

What a weekly visit looks like.

First session: orientation

Ideally a joint parent, teacher and student meeting. You walk the family through the curriculum structure, set homework expectations, and build relational rapport.

Every week after

First half, review last week's workbook and identify mastery versus gaps. Second half, introduce new material using the textbook they have pre-read. Assign next week's pages and submit your report.

Milestone assessments

Every three months you administer a 20-minute handwritten progress exam, included in your hourly rate.

Teachers FAQ

What licensed educators ask us.

How much can I really earn?

It depends on how many students you take on and which tiers they choose. A teacher working four hours a week averages around $13,500 a year in supplemental income. Two students at Builder earns $6,240 a year. Four students at Full Immersion would earn nearly $25,000 a year.

Do I have to make a minimum commitment?

No. You set your own availability, your own travel radius, and the grade levels and subjects you will teach. Take on as many or as few families as fits your life.

Can I negotiate my rate?

No, and that is intentional. Rates are set by the platform: $65 an hour for K–8, $70 an hour for high school and Pre-Algebra and above. No bidding, no marketplace pressure, the same rate every session.

Do I have to plan my own lessons?

No. Every student works from a structured workbook and textbook, purchased by the family through the platform. The curriculum eliminates the lesson-planning burden so you can focus on teaching rather than prep.

Where do I have to travel?

You decide. Set your maximum radius at 5, 10, 15, or 20 miles, and the platform only matches you with families inside it.
